About the test
Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography is a specialized heart test that evaluates how well the heart functions under stress. Instead of exercise, a medication called dobutamine is given through a vein to stimulate the heart and make it beat faster and stronger, similar to physical activity. Ultrasound images are taken before, during, and after the medication is administered to assess blood flow, heart muscle movement, and to detect coronary artery disease or other cardiac abnormalities. The test is safe and performed under close medical supervision.
Preparation: Preparation for Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography usually includes fasting for at least 4–6 hours before the test. Patients may be advised to avoid caffeine and certain medications, especially beta-blockers, as instructed by their doctor. Comfortable clothing should be worn, and it is important to inform the healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or current medications. The procedure generally takes about 45–60 minutes and is conducted in a controlled setting with continuous monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG throughout the test.
