A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a simple breathing test that measures how well your lungs are working. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions like asthma, COPD, and other breathing problems.
Preparation: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict breathing. Avoid heavy meals at least 2 hours before the test. Do not smoke for at least 4–6 hours prior, and avoid alcohol on the day of the test. Your doctor may advise stopping certain inhalers or breathing medications before the test—follow their instructions carefully. Inform the technician if you are feeling unwell or have recently had chest pain, surgery, or a respiratory infection. The test is safe, non-invasive, and may require you to take deep breaths and blow forcefully into a device.
