About the test

Ambulatory BP Monitoring (ABPM) – 24 Hours is a diagnostic test that measures blood pressure continuously over a full 24-hour period while a person goes about their normal daily activities. A small portable device is attached to a cuff placed around the upper arm, which automatically records blood pressure at regular intervals during the day and night. This test helps diagnose hypertension, detect white-coat hypertension, evaluate treatment effectiveness, and assess blood pressure variations during sleep. It provides a more accurate picture of blood pressure patterns compared to a single clinic reading.

Preparation: Preparation for 24-hour Ambulatory BP Monitoring is simple and does not require fasting. Patients should wear loose-fitting clothing to comfortably accommodate the blood pressure cuff and monitor. During the monitoring period, normal daily activities can be continued, but strenuous exercise, bathing, or showering should be avoided as the device must remain dry. It is important to keep the arm still and relaxed when the cuff inflates for accurate readings. Patients may also be asked to maintain a diary of activities, sleep times, and any symptoms experienced during the monitoring period. The device is removed after 24 hours, and the recorded data is analyzed by the healthcare provider.
